How do you benefit from your TCREW Membership?
I wish I had learned about TCREW early on in my career. I have met so many amazing and strong women in TCREW that are inspiring, inclusive, hard-working and constantly asking how they can help me. It is so important to support one another and especially mentor the younger generation coming up.
What do you do at Optima Engineering and in what circumstances would I come to you for something?
I help design spaces and solve problems for clients related to power, lighting, fire alarm, and/or telecom in their space while also having fun which is important and working together as a team.
What’s your go-to productivity trick?
There is no such thing as multi-tasking.
What behavior or personality trait do you most attribute your success to, and why?
This business is truly a relationship-based business. I’ve always treated clients, contractors, facility managers, and others like people. I can call up a contractor when I have a question or want to bounce off an idea. I can reach out to an interior designer when I need help making a decision on something at my house and vice versa. The first comment most people make to me is there’s no way you are an engineer.
What was your first job?
My brother and I had a lawn mowing business before we were old enough to work. My mom would drive us around in her station wagon with the mower, blower, and weed eater. I still enjoy mowing the lawn.
What’s a work-related accomplishment that you’re really proud of?
The renovation of Reynolds Coliseum – it was a three year amazing experience from design through construction that I learned a lot from personally and professionally, met some awesome people who I’m still friends with, and I’m proud of the work the entire team completed every time I walk back in the building.
What’s your biggest work pet peeve?
Laziness and complacency
What’s the best advice you were ever given? Who was it from?
Be kind to everyone. You don’t know where someone is in their journey. Always, always be kind. From Anna Lynch
If you could only eat one item for every meal for the rest of your life, what would it be?
If you were the only human left on Earth, what would you do?
Go bass fishing on a lake in each state
What book are you reading now?
I’m in the middle of Fearless Leadership by Carey Lohrenz.
What’s your favorite sport to watch and which team do you root for?
All things NC State and college football.
